Nick Waterman is an award-winning writer and director. His work explores aspects of Australian identity through poetic storytelling and strong graphic imagery. 

In 2020, The Flame premiered at the 70th Berlinale. The film was a deeply collaborative community-led project made in Moree in collaboration with Dayhanna Baker Barlow, Tyrese Fernando and Lance Whitton Jr and their families. The Flame won ‘Best Australian Short Film’ (Academy® Qualifying) at Flickerfest International Film Festival in 2021.

Nick's short film After the Smoke premiered at the Berlinale and MIFF in 2017. His other film credits include Vote Yes (2014) and From Here (2012).  

Under their production company Speech&Drama Pictures, Nick and artistic partner Meg Washington are currently writing a feature film adaptation of the famous Paul Kelly song, How to Make Gravy.
